Stories of Why Where Matters
Placement Project Tours Mendocino County

The conversations are going on across Mendocino County – from living rooms to the County boardroom – the talk is about why this place matters to all of us. The talk is about how we will work together as a community to imagine and manifest the kind of growth that allows for the development of housing, industry and jobs, while preserving the agricultural nature and beauty of the region.

As part of that dialogue, The Ukiah Players Theatre, in collaboration with the Center for Digital Storytelling, presents a new touring version of The PlaceMeant Project: Stories of Why Where Matters.

The production is an exploration of particular places in our County, and the meaning these places hold for the storytellers and the community. The result is a fresh, tender and honest glimpse into the hearts and minds of the people who live here, and a celebration of the deep-seated experiences that make this place unique.

At its core, the PlaceMeant Project is an invitation to the community to tell each other stories about our life here in Mendocino County – our significant place-based memories, our profound appreciations -- and to imagine what kind of life we might create here for our grandchildren.

After each performance, audience members are invited to stay for an informal story circle to share their own personal stories about Mendocino County and to swap their deepest wishes for the future. The audience, and indeed anyone reading this notice, is invited to respond to one -- or all -- of the following questions: "Tell us a story about a place that epitomizes the best of Mendocino County for you." "Tell us a story about when you felt the most alive and excited about being part of this community? (What made it such a memorable experience? What role did you play?)" What are three wishes you have for the future of your community?" Stories (300  words or less, please) can be emailed to: stories@ukiahplayerstheatre.org.

The PlaceMeant Project is directed by Kate Magruder and Joe Lambert, with video production design by Erica Cooperrider. The Project is funded by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation and is co-sponsored by the Arts Council of Mendocino County. The Arena Theatre and the Willits Community Theatre are co-producing performances in their facilities.
